Building Permit for Extension to a Business Premises
If you wish to extend a business premises you are required to obtain a building permit. Before you proceed to apply for a building permit, it is likely that you will need a planning permit.
Planning permits differ from building permits.
A planning permit is issued by council to confirm that the intended design fits with council's planning scheme for your location.
The planning scheme takes into account things like:
- the proposed purpose of the building
- functionality
- aesthetic fit with the surroundings.
A building permit on the other hand, is issued by a registered building surveyor who makes sure the way you want to carry out the extensions is satisfactory i.e. you will build your extension using suitable techniques and materials, and that the finished product will be structurally sound.
